Universal Unilink, the purchasing association based in Greenville, South Carolina, recently introduced Tess Sanford as the recipient of its 2022-2023 Karl Fowler scholarship.
Karl Fowler is close to the heart of the Universal Unilink family. He is the unofficial goodwill ambassador for Universal Unilink and son of founders Allan and Gayle Fowler. Karl’s autism gives him a unique perspective on the daily happenings at the company offices. His cheerful greetings to employees and visitors alike are an unfailing reminder that this company’s strength would always be the relationships forged by friends and family. Anyone that has met Karl knows that he has a thirst for knowledge and a delight in learning. The Karl Fowler Scholarship was established to honor that appreciation for education and foster a culture of learning in our extended Universal Unilink family.
Sanford will graduate in May 2022 from Hilton Head High School in Hilton Head, South Carolina. An accomplished student, Sanford has maintained a 4.0 GPA, ranks fifth in her class of 256 students and will be awarded an International Baccalaureate Diploma at graduation. Her extracurricular activities include 14 theater productions in high school, president of Model UN, National Honor Society, National Science Honor Society, National Chinese Honor Society and Beta Club.
She has served her community as well with over 500 hours of volunteer community service while in high school, ranging from elementary school student tutoring to hosting activities at local senior care facilities. She has been awarded the Mayor’s Community Service Award for four consecutive years and was the statewide high school student recipient of the South Carolina Electric Cooperatives Community Service Award. Sanford has been selected to receive one of the U.S. Department of State’s National Security Language Initiative (NSLI-Y) study-abroad scholarships, and she will study a critical language this upcoming summer before heading off to college.
Sanford is considering acceptance offers from several schools, including the University of South Carolina Honors College, University of Michigan, University of Southern California and the University of Notre Dame, where she will continue her education in Business Administration/Economics. Sanford is most appreciative of receiving the Karl Fowler Scholarship and thanks Universal Unilink for its ongoing support of post-secondary education of the next generation.
